Allergies are more common than you think, and they come in many forms. Some people already know that they have allergies, and some could be well into adulthood before they realize there’s a problem. While some people have some strange allergies, most people find themselves sniffling and dealing with a scratchy throat because of common allergens. If you feel some symptoms, check out the following five common allergies and then talk with your doctor about treatment.
-
Weeds/Pollen
Weeds and pollen are two of the most common types of allergies. People who suffer from this typically experience a stuffy nose and watery eyes during high pollen seasons, which is usually around spring and fall. Ragweed is on the top of the list, and since it’s found in basically every area in the US, there’s really no way for allergy sufferers to get away from it. The bad news is that this kind of allergy usually stays with you forever, once it has developed. Luckily, most people can survive with a seasonal allergy medication, but some may require a bit more invasive medicine to keep the symptoms at bay.
-
Mold
Mold is another common allergen. Like pollen, this is high in the atmosphere during all seasons, and since it can be found outdoors and indoors, it’s hard for people to cope with. When you have this kind of allergy, your immune system reacts in a way that will make you cough, make your eyes itch, and other symptoms. If you suffer from mold allergies, it’s important to have your home checked for signs of mold and reduce your exposure to them. If you find any, remediate the situation quickly. Since mold is also outside, most mold allergy sufferers will need to take medication when their symptoms hit in order to find any sort of relief.
-
Dust Mites
Do you start sniffling after you clean? You probably are allergic to dust mites. These are tiny creatures that actually live in dust and they thrive in humid places. This usually means you’ll find them in furniture and carpets—places that typically aren’t dusted very often. Besides medication, you can remove dust mites by keeping a clean home. Vacuum regularly, especially carpets and furniture. You should also consider getting a HEPA filter or air purifier to help remove these dust mites from the air. Another remedy would be to wash all beddings and blankets, preferably in hot water. The best temperature for soaking them in is about 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have beddings that can’t be washed, freeze them overnight to kill those nasty mites. While you’re doing all these, especially during vacuuming, be sure to wear a mask. This will protect you from inhaling them. It would also help if you stay away from the area for 20 minutes or more to allow dust and other allergens to settle.
-
Grass
There are a lot of people out there who are irritated by grass. The kinds of grass that causes allergies are Bermuda, Johnson, Kentucky, Orchard, and more. This makes it difficult in the spring, summer and fall since grass is predominant during these seasons, but it can also be challenging for those who live in nicer climates year round. Luckily, individuals who suffer from these allergies are typically only affected outside, but if the windows are open or grass is brought in the house, it can wreak havoc inside too. If you suffer from grass allergies, you likely need to stay off the grass and take regular medication to keep your allergies under control.
-
Pet Dander
Whether dogs or cats, pet dander is another popular allergen. Some people who suffer from these allergies stay away from dogs and cats altogether and take strong medication when they know they’ll be around these animals. Others, though, don’t let their allergy interfere with their desire for a four-legged friend. Some people are able to keep their allergies under control and still have pets by keeping up with the dander. Opting for hardwood instead of carpet can make it easier to clean the dander from the home. Regular cleaning also helps, and regular baths for your dog or cat are also necessary. Keep in mind that you may still need to take medication, but it’s possible that you will be able to have your pet too.
Other common allergies can also be of:
- Nuts
- Shell-fish
- Eggs
- Insect bites
- Weeds
- Grass
- Pollen
Allergies aren’t fun to deal with, but with medication and the right precautions, you can maintain an active and healthy life even with your allergies. If you regularly suffer from stuffy nose, water eyes, or a broken cough, you should see your doctor. The next time you are at your doctor for a regular health checkup, make sure to ask him or her about allergies to see if you may be prone to one of these common ailments.
