Despite it becoming mainstream, there are plenty of people out there who either fear or look down on plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures in general. Yes, there was a time when these procedures posed a health risk, they were pretty invasive and, yes, there are times when the results look borderline ridiculous and justified the word ‘plastic’. Times have greatly changed, and with constant innovations in the field, not only have cosmetic surgeries become way safer than they used to be, they also provide those who undergo them natural-looking results. As stated in Forbes Magazine, the improvement in technology and science behind the procedures, allows for a more personalized approach, better pre-op estimates that actually cut down on the operating time. The healing process has also become much shorter, and certain treatments don’t even require any as they’ve become minimally to non-invasive. Yes, cosmetic surgery is immeasurably safer than before, but what are the actual benefits of undergoing it?
Fight the clock
Some people want to do what they call ‘aging gracefully’, but then there are others who simply refuse to accept this concept, at least not entirely. With age, your skin loses volume, wrinkles begin to appear and become deeper and more noticeable, and the face you look at in the morning doesn’t reflect the young soul that’s trapped inside. Granted, certain people do go overboard and end up looking like poorly drawn hyper-inflated dolls, but there are new procedures that don’t allow that to happen. For instance, there’s microdermabrasion which uses tiny crystals to buff and smooth the skin and encourage new cell growth by jump-starting your natural collagen production. Even the notorious Botox is much safer now, and there are such fillers as Restylane and Juvederm made from a sugar that naturally occurs in the body that also boost collagen production. There are tons of minimally invasive procedures that will help one regain that fresh plumpness to the skin, and if it makes a person feel just a bit better and more confident about themselves, why not do it?
It’s more than vanity
One of the reasons people frown upon cosmetic surgeries is that they feel it’s a sign of vanity. No, for some people cosmetic surgery has a more profound impact than meets the eye. It’s not just about looking better, it’s about feeling better. We don’t judge people who have braces because they wish to have beautiful straight teeth, but we’re quick to judge those who were perhaps bullied in school for being flat-chested or had a deviated septum or a bump that made their nose look unappealing. The psychological effects of bullying on account of appearance can leave a lifelong mark on someone. They can cause body image issues and oceans of insecurity. If a surgery such as breast augmentation or a nose job will make someone happy and make them smile in the morning, there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t do this for themselves. There are tons of studies, including one done at University of Basel in Switzerland that show the tremendous positive psychological effects of plastic surgery. Dealing with a part of your body that causes you severe insecurities can improve the quality of your life, not just because you look better, but actually understand and accept yourself, love yourself even more, and that’s always a good thing.
It gives you strength
It should be noted that people with ‘minor shortcomings’ aren’t the only ones looking to enhance their looks. There are people who have suffered a trauma that has changed their appearance, and that can have a horrendous effect on your perception of self, and can even cause one to feel like they’re not who they used to be. It makes them feel powerless and can result in seclusion and isolation, which can lead to further deterioration of their mental health. Having the option of cosmetic surgery gives one a sense that they’re in control of their life, and that they hold the key to their happiness, and if there is something about your body that makes you feel like you have lost all control, and you believe corrective and subsequently cosmetic surgery will make you feel like you’re taking life back into your hands, go on and dive in.
It’s time that the stigma that exists regarding cosmetic surgery is removed once and for all. People have their reasons for wanting something altered and enhanced, and they shouldn’t feel judged for wanting to look a bit younger, more attractive and feel beautiful. If there is something that is causing you an enormous amount of insecurity, and there is a way, a safe way to rectify what you consider a flaw, don’t let anyone shame you. It’s your happiness and sense of contentment that’s at stake, so just ignore the nay-sayers and do what your heart tells you to. Just make sure you find the best surgeon out there and keep your expectations realistic. You don’t want to change your appearance, just bring out the beauty that’s hiding underneath a flaw.
